The Legendary Club - Robert Johnson

Some think this club's famed sound system is the best in Europe. Despite being named after blues guitarist Robert Johnson, techno beats are the order of the day here, with DJs from across the world as well as local up-and-comers. The little club routinely puts on unforgettable nights by focusing on the most crucial aspect of the event: the music. The DJ works from the same level as the dance floor in the main room, which fits less than 100 people—a it's unique level of intimacy that's worth risking the rigorous door restriction. Take advantage of the views of the Main River from the terrace that wraps around the modest structure.

Situated on the banks of the river main, Robert Johnson is one of the best techno music clubs in the world and a true Legend of nightlife in Frankfurt. It was here that Frankfurt's house-techno genre arose, and the club is today adored and revered by fans and the world's top DJs. This club is more concerned with the sound quality than with the aesthetics of the space. The Interior is, in fact, small, minimalist is resigned-looking. Even the lighting is kept to a minimum, and to illuminate the Interior there are only colored neon on the ceiling. The dance floor, on the other hand, is located in a vast barren space with a bar and a DJ. A row of antique TVs sits above the DJ, broadcasting some bizarre footage.A row of antique TVs sits above the DJ, broadcasting some bizarre footage.

Few clubs are able to maintain international significance while still asserting control over trends. When Robert Johnson first opened its doors in 1999, it soon established itself as a vital location for electronic music, evolving into one of today's most well-known venues for modern club culture. It all started with a collaboration with Offenbach's local University of Art and Design, and their tight links have continued to this day.

Robert Johnson has influenced generations of producers, DJs, musicians, and club-goers for more over two decades, evolving from a neighborhood to an ideology for some.

Robert Johnson's terrace, located upstairs of a local rowing club and overlooking the industrial port region on the Main River in Offenbach, offers those sights that subtly add to a very special form of club romance. Many stories have been circulated throughout the years about what happened on the notorious wooden floor in front of world-famous DJs performing close up on an incredible sound system.

‘My vision was to make a club like an art space: white walls, a black wooden dance floor enabling people to dance longer, fewer lights to keep the focus on the good sound system, and nothing else,’ says Robert Johnson’s co-founder and resident Dj Ata Matias This Frankfurt club is uber minimalist and everything has been designed to be removable. ‘We can make it feel bigger and we can make it feel smaller. It’s like stepping into a friend’s living room.’

The club has drawn crowds with a program that goes beyond the electronic mainstream and its own sense of balance in the use of light, vision, and restraint. All of the Robert Johnson family's other endeavors are informed by the club's lean aesthetics: the in-house label of the same name, AMP, the younger member located in the foothills of Frankfurt city, and the newest addition NEU, the second floor. The comprehensive publication "Come on in My Kitchen," published in 2012, revealed what lurks behind it all: a collaborative attitude.
