Talks about music, motivation, influence, and sexism with LAYZ:
Today we encounter gender bias in many different areas. It can even be found in raves. People should not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, or other circumstances, but unfortunately it is still happening and many societies are trying to somehow solve this problem. We often see different standards and criticisms directed at people working in the industry, be it for managers, production groups or artists themselves, sexism is prevalent and often rejected when directed at female figures.
I want to share with you an interview with an artist, LAYZ, who talks about her views and experiences.
LAYZ is an artist, DJ and producer. In addition to producing, she creates sets for shows and festivals, works as her own "art director" for goods and visuals, and finally manages her own social media in deciding what to post, because as she says: “consistent and interactive presence on social media is paramount!”
She has never been interested in hiring a social media manager because she loves to participate in everything that is LAYZ. She thinks it's important that everything comes from her, so she often connects fans through DM.
Things brought her to this position in the EDM industry and things gave her the motivation to get to where she is now.
Since attending several festivals for the first time in 2014, her love for EDM has grown even more. In 2017, she decided that she wanted to become an artist herself. When she first started working, she was messing with the DDJ-SX3 controller and posting videos twice on Twitter.
As more attention was paid to mixing skills and SoundCloud mixes, booking for local bands began. This is where the whole story begins.
Her inspiration for performance was the main motivation that brought her so far. She knew that she knew from the inside that one day she could find herself in their position if she could do everything and work selflessly to develop herself and her creativity.
How does being a woman affect your work in the industry? Pros and cons:
Unfortunately, being a woman in an industry where men dominate has a huge impact on women's activities. She was told she was only in the starting lineup because she is a woman. But this is not the case. She makes her own music, she mixes it live.
Society does not see how much work women put into their work, how much they struggle to achieve success. Being a woman in this industry has its advantages. For example, since there are not many women in the industry, they are more selective.
Women who want to work in the industry:
Women should be given the opportunity to create a platform that can give other women the confidence to go there in a male-dominated industry. At first many will doubt you. But as soon as you prove that you can drop it like everyone else, then being a man or woman in this industry becomes irrelevant.
The main thing is to love your work, do it with enthusiasm, joy and love. You should also have thick skin as you do these days. It is important that women do not get used to this reality to fight to rectify the situation and prove to everyone what a feminine power she is.
How we beat sexism and overcome it is by building an alliance with one another rather than pulling each other apart. Be patient when entering the music industry. People quickly recognize talent, whether you are a man or a woman. However, at the same time, protect yourself, your music, your dreams and your goals. Let no one despise you.
Always talk about yourself in a way that shows that you know why you are there and you know what you can do. Do not allow sexism to interfere with your excellence or the creation of new music because it does not meet the "standards" of women in the music industry.
Do not give up and keep pushing. Give everything. Just let the music talk.
Finally, never let anyone else touch your dreams. Do not tell anyone that you can not listen to your heart and mind, follow your goal and shine wherever you are.
