Interview with Wesley, Promoter in Brighton, UK

Clubnparty decided to do some interviews with people who work in nightlife industry, we are starting with a Promoter!

1. Hi there! What is your name and where are you from?

Hello! My name is Wesley and I am from Brighton, UK.

2. For how long have you been promoting?

I have been promoting for 9 Months.

3. How did you get into it?

I had a wide network of friends who partied in Brighton. I was not into promoting at that time, but one day a good friend of mine stopped to promote for a while, so he asked me to help out his “partner” and when the friend came back after a few weeks, I was doing a great job + enjoying it which led to us all working together.

4. Do you have any other job?

I work full-time as a freelance interior designer; I really enjoy that part of my life too.

5. Tell us your Favorite DJs?

I might be somewhat bias but I will go for Brennan Heart, John Digweed for now & Jimi Tenor my all time fav

6. What songs should they stop playing?

As for me, frankly speaking songs like “Oasis-Wonderwall” needs to stop playing in clubs NOW!

7. What is the best part about promoting?

I get to meet a lot funny people from all around the world, we party together exchange few words and that’s the part I enjoy the most. I get to party for free and earn money on top and also the network with lot of interesting people gives you a lot of good friends too.

8. What makes a really good club?

First of all a semi-strict door policy, which enables the ratio of  65% girls and 35% Boys, most clubs do 80% - 20% which I don’t agree with. Dress code is vital, it has to be “Stylish/Swag”, the DJ lineup should keep a high standard playing the latest music, Occasional celebrity appearances is a must to keep the club hyped up and obviously the staff of the club should be fun and engaged with the guests.

9. What are your best advices to a group of people planning to go out to a VIP club?

Well, dress accordingly to the club’s requirement, be on TIME, let your promotor know the ratio guys to girls are because sometimes in the last moment, people decide to bring along more people and that just does not work out at times so they’re risking to not get in.

10. Don’t you get fed up with going out all the time?

A lot of people ask me this but I love it! I work hard from Mon-Friday at my regular job which does not give me time for a social life outside of work. I’m getting along with my friends whilst making money on top!

11. How often does it happen the guests have not dressed up enough to get in?

In general, that happens every night, but with my guests it has only happened once. My guests know the dress code I always inform them, because don’t want anyone to get rejected!

12. How does one become a promoter?

Well, first step is to go twice a week to the club you want to promote for. Make friends with the regulars and the staff, Final step is to bring a lot of girls and big groups to the club, this will catch the eye of promoters and regulars. At this point, if you are a straight up person (which this job requires you to be), you can always make deals with a promoter to make sure you get paid for your guests when coming to a party. Once you start to get paid, you can call yourself a promoter!

Thank you, Wesley, for your time and great answers. We are looking forward to keep working with you. We have taken onboard your suggestions! Wish you all the best!
